Confessions of a marketing idiot.

Okay, I don't blog much. Hardly ever, in fact. If you took all my blogs, you might have the beginnings of an inane short story, so I am fixing to change that.

Not to toot my own horn, but I can write some...obviously not that well or I'd have a nice contract with one of the "Big Six", but well enough that people buy my books (or one incredibly wealthy person with OCD) and I receive pretty good reviews. So...why haven't I made it?

To put it in lovely words of my SO, I'm a marketing idiot. This is quite different from advertising...marketing. I know so little about pushing my own brand that you could stuff what I do know in a thimble and have enough left over for communion.

There are those of you out there who are fantastic at the marketing biz and good on ya, mates, but me? Hardly. Pshaw! Fie and avast and all that jazz. I can sling a catch phrase, but I just don't know how to plant it. If there are those of you out there who do know, feel free to share the love, if not...no worries. I often ask my SO if she has any ideas and she has tons. She's the marketing genius, I'm the wordsmith. That doesn't mean she parts with pearls of wisdom, far from it. She wants me to hoist my own sail, tote my own barge and whatnot. Learn on the fly. Take a course, watch YouTube videos on the subject.

Egad.

Right now I am hip deep in projects and developing story bibles and trying to hit the cons out here in Northern California (scarce) as well as find my own way as a writer (I think I have a clue here, but it is an evolving process that is eating my life). How do I make time for marketing? Should I hire someone?

By the way, looked into hiring someone. If I had that kind of cash, I wouldn't need a marketer!

I am offering no help to those of you who are stuck in the same boat. It is a leaky thing that smells like potential failure and Pringles, but I will commiserate with you, you are not alone. I am here to lend an ear if you want to chat via email (there's a page here just for that, btw) and maybe we can share the misery.
